What Alberta actually pays
A credit that pays out in cash when it exceeds what you owe the state. Close to a rebate for most independent productions.

Uplifts
Rate bumps that stack on the base program, up to its published ceiling. Uplifts are the most commonly missed money in any program, because qualifying for one is usually a location or scheduling decision made long before anyone is thinking about submittal.
- +30%
Alberta FTTC 30% Stream
30% of all eligible Alberta production costs. An ALTERNATIVE rate replacing the 22%, not an uplift added to it. Qualify via Alberta-owned company, treaty co-production, or 75%+ of Alberta shoot days rural/remote.
City, county & regional programs
Local incentives that can stack on top of the state program — but each defines its own qualified spend, caps and residency rules, so their rates can't simply be added to the state percentage. Worth a call before you count on one.
Edmonton Screen Location Scouting Support
In-kind only: accommodation, travel, a $60/day per diem and a local scout. No rate on spend.
The rule to remember
NOT as-of-right. Ministerial approval, continuous intake but expressly subject to budgetary restrictions, and an Authorization Letter sets a binding project maximum. Apply within 120 days of starting Alberta photography. A production can qualify fully and still get nothing.
Common questions
- What is the Alberta film tax incentive rate?
- Alberta offers 22% to 30% on qualified in-state spend through the Alberta Film & Television Tax Credit (FTTC). It is a refundable credit. A credit that pays out in cash when it exceeds what you owe the state. Close to a rebate for most independent productions.
- What is the minimum spend for the Alberta film incentive?
- $499,999 of eligible Alberta production costs. Falling under the minimum is a total loss of the benefit, not a partial one — it is worth confirming the threshold before locking a budget.
- What uplifts are available in Alberta?
- Alberta offers 1 uplift on its headline program: Alberta FTTC 30% Stream. Uplifts are usually decided by scheduling and location choices made months before submittal.
- Are there city or county film incentives in Alberta?
- Yes — Edmonton Screen Location Scouting Support. Local programs generally stack on top of the state incentive but define their own qualified spend, caps and rules, so their rates can't simply be added to the state percentage.
- Is the Alberta film incentive transferable or refundable?
- Refundable — the excess over your state tax liability is paid out in cash.
Verify before you budget. These figures come from our own incentives database and each shows when it was last reviewed — but programs change between funding cycles and legislative sessions. Confirm with the film office, or ask us, before a number goes into a budget.

Programs in a similar rate band. The mechanism matters as much as the percentage — a transferable credit at 30% is not the same money as a cash grant at 30%.
