What North Macedonia actually pays
The state pays cash against qualified spend. No tax liability needed, no broker, no discount — the cleanest structure for an independent production.

How to apply
A film producer registered in North Macedonia, with at least one publicly screened feature film and authorized by contract as producer, co-producer or production service provider, files the request with the North Macedonia Film Agency at least 15 days before the project starts. The Director issues a confirmation within 15 days. The producer then opens a dedicated project account, transfers at least the confirmed amount (not less than EUR 100,000) and signs the refund contract before starting. Within 45 days after completion the producer submits the qualified cost calculation, invoices, bank statements and an independent audit engaged by the Agency at the producer's expense; the payment decision follows within 30 days.
The rule to remember
Apply through a Macedonian producer at least 15 days before the project starts; only costs paid from the dedicated project account after the confirmation date count.
Common questions
- What is the North Macedonia film tax incentive rate?
- North Macedonia offers 20% on qualified in-state spend through the North Macedonia Film Production Refund. It is a cash grant. The state pays cash against qualified spend. No tax liability needed, no broker, no discount — the cleanest structure for an independent production.
- What is the minimum spend for the North Macedonia film incentive?
- EUR 100,000 in qualified costs (in denar equivalent at the National Bank middle rate), not funded from the state budget. Falling under the minimum is a total loss of the benefit, not a partial one — it is worth confirming the threshold before locking a budget.
- Is the North Macedonia film incentive transferable or refundable?
- Refundable — the excess over your state tax liability is paid out in cash.
Verify before you budget. These figures come from our own incentives database and each shows when it was last reviewed — but programs change between funding cycles and legislative sessions. Confirm with the film office, or ask us, before a number goes into a budget.
