What qualifies

Qualified production must spend >=$500K in Alabama (>=$50K for soundtracks/music videos). 25% of qualified non-payroll spend + 35% of Alabama-resident payroll. Non-resident payroll qualifies at 25% capped at first $1M ATL / $500K BTL per person.

How to apply

Apply to the Alabama Entertainment Office (Film Office) with a $100 application fee no later than 30 days before production activity begins; receive state certification, then submit a CPA-audited expenditure report to claim the rebate via the Alabama Dept. of Revenue.

The rule to remember

35% is a wages-only rate: with 30-40% of AL spend as resident payroll the blended rate is ~28-29%. Spend past $20M earns nothing, and the $22M/yr statewide pool (earmarked at application) is what actually decides whether you get paid.

Common questions

What is the Alabama film tax incentive rate?
Alabama offers 25% to 35% on qualified in-state spend through the Entertainment Industry Incentive Act. It is a rebate. A cash payment back on qualified spend, usually after an audit. Like a grant in practice, though often funded from a capped pool.
What is the minimum spend for the Alabama film incentive?
$500K film/TV (episodes/commercial series may aggregate over 12 months); $50K soundtracks & music videos; $30K music albums. From 10/1/2026: soundtracks & music videos drop to $30K (Act 2026-540). Falling under the minimum is a total loss of the benefit, not a partial one — it is worth confirming the threshold before locking a budget.
Is the Alabama film incentive transferable or refundable?
Refundable — the excess over your state tax liability is paid out in cash.

Verify before you budget. These figures come from our own incentives database and each shows when it was last reviewed — but programs change between funding cycles and legislative sessions. Confirm with the film office, or ask us, before a number goes into a budget.
