How to apply
Apply to the Cayman Islands Film Commission for a Production License, then file the online rebate application 30 to 60 days after the license with script, schedule, itemized Cayman budget in CI$, financing agreements and insurance. The Interim Certificate issues within about 30 days. Within 180 days of wrap, file an audited expenditure statement from a Commission-approved independent auditor; the Final Certificate follows assessment and the rebate is paid within 90 days of it. After the Interim Certificate the right to the rebate may be assigned once, in full, to a single qualified assignee such as a financier. Eligible formats: feature films, documentaries, scripted and unscripted series, game shows and video games; commercials are excluded.
The rule to remember
Obtain a Production License and then an Interim Certificate before principal photography, which must start within 90 days of the certificate. Productions receiving other Cayman Islands government funding cannot claim, and content judged harmful to the islands' economy or tourism does not qualify.

Common questions
- What is the Cayman Islands film tax incentive rate?
- Cayman Islands offers 15% to 35% on qualified in-state spend through the Film Production Rebate Program. It is a cash grant. The state pays cash against qualified spend. No tax liability needed, no broker, no discount — the cleanest structure for an independent production.
- What is the minimum spend for the Cayman Islands film incentive?
- CI$250,000 CIQPE, all eligible formats. Falling under the minimum is a total loss of the benefit, not a partial one — it is worth confirming the threshold before locking a budget.
- What uplifts are available in Cayman Islands?
- Cayman Islands offers 6 uplifts on its headline program: Unscripted Production Uplift, Set in the Cayman Islands Uplift, Positive Portrayal Uplift, Caymanian Training Uplift, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Uplift, Local Vendor and Local Labor Uplift. Uplifts are usually decided by scheduling and location choices made months before submittal.
- Is the Cayman Islands film incentive transferable or refundable?
- Transferable — the credit can be sold, typically below face value, so model the net rather than the headline rate. Refundable — the excess over your state tax liability is paid out in cash.
Verify before you budget. These figures come from our own incentives database and each shows when it was last reviewed — but programs change between funding cycles and legislative sessions. Confirm with the film office, or ask us, before a number goes into a budget.
